There can’t be many people who don’t enjoy a chance to be pampered and preened on a weekend away and a spa break in lovely surroundings can tick all the boxes.

Here is a list of venues in the Newcastle area, or within easy driving distance of the city centre, which are open to customers to unwind.
Slaley Hall, Coal Road, Hexham, NE47 0BX
Slaley Hall spa is nestled in 1,000 acres of serene Northumberland countryside where it invites customers to unwind and recharge.
Its Serenity Spa boasts a 20-metre pool with a massage station and it has a black granite steam room with amethyst crystal; a sauna with quartz crystal; outdoor hot tubs; a fitness studio and hydrotherapy pool.
There are nine treatment rooms, including a Luxe Dual suite and a ‘finishing touches’ studio with a range of products to add to customers’ home spa routines.

Slaley Holistic Body Experience
An all-encompassing treatment starting with a full-body skin brushing and exfoliation to prepare the skin, then a deep body, face and scalp massage using a blend of essential oils to suit individual requirements.
The 50 minutes treatment is £129 from Monday to Thursday and £139 on Friday and Saturday.
Wellbeing massage
This 50-minute Elemis aromatherapy massage uses a blend of individually-chosen oils and is described as “lavishly hydrating”. The cost is £84 (£94 on Friday and Saturday).
There are also packages to look out for which come with use of the hotel’s leisure facilities and including a Twilight offer, with a glass of prosecco, and Serenity, Indulgence and Ultimate packages which include both fizz and a light lunch.

All About You – Urban Beauty Retreat, Grey Street Hotel, Newcastle, NE1 6AE
The “All About You” ethos of the retreat sees it offer a chilled-out environment to relax and have personalised treatments using brands such as Elemis, OPI, Delilah and Lycon and including an array of facials, massages, body treatments, manicure, pedicures.
A former winner and a finalist last year in the Professional Beauty awards, it describes itself as an “oasis of calm” hidden away in Grey Street and an idea of its ‘All About’ packages include a separate focus on face, body, hands and feet or men plus ones including hotel stays.

Malmaison, Newcastle Quayside, NE1 3DX
Malmaison Spa in the city hotel is doing its bit to conjure up a world of calming therapies, including packages which offer aromatherapy and deep tissue and salt scrub treatments as well as tailor-made top-to-toe experiences and spa nights in.
The spa is only from Friday to Sunday.

A stone’s throw away from the centre of Newcastle, this Jesmond spa (there’s also the branch in Grey Street) offers treatments ranging from massages, luxury manicures and pedicures to non-surgical face and body lifting plus packages. It says they offer the “perfect Mother’s Day treat”.

The Gosforth Park Hotel spa aims to revitalise health, body and mind with its extensive range of treatments and products.
On the menu are anti-ageing facials, aromatherapy massages, pedicures and manicures, waxing, St Tropez tanning and eyelash treatments.
Indian Head Massage
This massage performed on shoulders, neck, scalp and face is said to be excellent for relieving stress, tension and headaches. It costs £35.
A reflexology session for £50 focuses on the feet and lower leg with the aim of encouraging healing; reducing stress and tension and improving general health and well-being.

The Spa at Ramside, Ramside Hall Hotel & Golf Club, Durham, DH1 1TD
Having undergone a multi-million-pound revamp in 2015, this spa at Ramside Hall Hotel in County Durham has one of the UK’s largest hydrotherapy pool set-ups in the UK – a 25-metre pool, an outdoor vitality pool, a balcony infinity pool and a spa garden along with a variety of steam rooms, saunas and a mud chamber – and it has been nominated in the past in the Good Spa Guide Awards’ Best for Wellness category.
Packages include:

Seaham Hall, Lord Byrons Walk, Seaham, SR7 7AG
The Seaham Hall hotel in County Durham previously has been nominated for a Best for Customer Service award for its relaxing Serenity Spa.
Guests are immediately whisked away from the outside world as they enter an underground walkway of pebbles with running water on each side and then there are 17 treatment suites to choose from plus a 20m pool, outdoor hot tubs and a sun terrace.

Ideal for any weather, the hotel’s spa garden has two outdoor hot pools – including an infinity-edge hydrotherapy pool, which it is says is perfect for keeping guests warm even on a chilly autumn evening, with massage features and a Jacuzzi.
There’s a glass-fronted sauna cabin too, offering views of the grounds.
There are also lounging areas, a fire pit, water feature, decking with underfloor heating and various packages which include use of the wet spa and wellness facilities and a spell in the Spa Garden. The hotel also has a new spa restaurant, Nu Sana.
Half-day Hideaway
Available from £95 Monday to Thursday until September, this treat invites you to arrive at 11am; don fluffy robes and slippers and:

Himalayan Splendour
Costing £165 for two hours, this promises a top-to-toe rejuvenation designed to bring about a sense of wellbeing.
Created exclusively for Rockliffe Hall, it uses mineral-rich Himalayan salt; warming arnica and therapeutic bamboo massage tools. It includes a facial using a blend of Goji berry and macadamia oil to ‘sooth, repair and nourish’ stressed skin.

The country house in Tees Valley has a lakeside spa with an outdoor hot tub, a herbal sauna, salt inhalation room and conservatory and offers a luxury location for afternoon tea, drinks or a bite to eat.

Mother and Me Tea
Designed especially for Mother’s Day and available from March 21-30, this £160 for two treat combines a treatment with afternoon tea served in the Spa Conservatory at lakeside Spa. The visit includes:
