Shopping for a New Career at Capital Mall

We’ve all heard the expression that if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life. But when finding that right fit, it can be hard to know where to start. Why not look for work at the place you’ve enjoyed browsing for goodies, window shopping with a tasty treat or relaxing with a Friday night movie and popcorn? In a nutshell, Olympia’s bustling Capital Mall.

An approved Thurston Green Business, the Mall hosts more than 100 stores, restaurants and events all year long. With so much activity, they’re always looking for new staff to join the team. Working for the Mall itself or one of its many shops, you can find the perfect position for your training, skill set and availability: seasonal, full- or part-time.

“Currently over 20 of our stores are hiring!” shares Marketing and Business Development Manager Stef Cicerello. Positions are compiled via the Mall’s Careers page, which is updated weekly. Mall management and staff do their best to keep up with new listings, but some may pop up between times so check with individual stores if you’ve got your heart set on a specific one. Those listed are broken down by name of business hiring, their current opportunities and who to contact or how to apply online.

Working at the Mall is a rite of passage for many of us, starting in our teenage years. “So many people I meet throughout the county tell me their first job was in the mall,” says Cicerello. The best part is that it’s centrally located with lots of fun little perks. “We have an Intercity Transit hub and plenty of dry, safe parking so transportation is never a problem. You’re also the first to know about and take part in many new events and promotions at the center and providing customer services to our community is great networking.”

Speaking of Intercity Transit, they’ve currently got their own ad posted on the Mall’s career board. IT is looking for coach operators—otherwise known as bus drivers—and will provide paid training from day one. Operators receive a full-time, eight-week instruction period that includes the required CDL license.

The Mall is constantly changing and evolving as both new and existing customers arrive to experience all the latest arrivals. “There are new businesses continuing to open at Capital Mall, like our newly opened Bijoux Noirs and Cascadian Co.,” says Cicerello.

Cascadian Co. is a local small business providing imported apparel and accessories for women. With a mix-and-match approach to fashion, it’s a welcome, fun addition. Bijoux Noirs is fashion that aims to make a real statement whether worn to work or play, day or night, fancy or casual.

For foodies, those with work experience or just hopeful of starting a lifelong career, there are 18 restaurant and eatery locations that serve everything from family parties—because who hasn’t celebrated a birthday at Chuck E. Cheese’s—to gelato and coffee. Dining options range from fast casual chains making tried-and-true favorites to locally owned spots like Miso. For something a little fancier, try sit-down dining at Stack 571 inside the Mall or adjacent spots like Olive Garden, Fujiyama Japanese Steak House and i.talia pizzeria.

But if the hustle and bustle of a busy retail setting keeps you on your toes, there are stores for everyone. Apparel, home, health and beauty, jewelry, books, music and movies can all be found under the Mall’s warm, dry roof.

When you’re working at the Mall, there are always events happening to keep things hopping. Festive, seasonal guests like the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus, and community-wide blood- and vaccination-drives organized and facilitated by community health specialists.

Or join the Mall Walkers to get in a little exercise between shifts. These fitness fanatics of all ages do more than just get in their daily steps. They raise money annually that is donated to a different local nonprofit. In 2021, Capital Mall Walkers raised $2,000 for the University of Washington Heart Research Fund by collecting spare change they found while walking.

Open seven days a week, Mall jobs promote a healthy work-life balance because much of your routine shopping can be done along the way. Forget to pack a lunch that day? Don’t worry, just zip over to the food court for a bite. Car on the fritz? Take an IT bus for free, connecting to nearly every corner of Thurston County. Need to return an overdue book or pick up music and movies for weekend entertainment? The West Olympia Timberland Library branch is now open inside Capital Mall and offers services galore.

Whether you need a job to pay the bills or just for a little extra spending money, put the Mall on your list. If you have questions about a particular job opening, contact that location directly using the Center Directory. Or swing by and ask in person, staff are always happy to help. Afterwards, reward yourself with a pretzel just because you can.
